With the Qt4-using QGears2 windowed 2D benchmark, Cinnamon did well overall but Xfce and LXDE and GNOME Shell stood out as performing well. With these out-of-the-box Linux Mint 17 packages, KDE 4.13.0 and MATE 1.8.0 were performing slower than the other desktop environments for this Intel graphics configuration with QGears2.

The x11perf micro-benchmarks aren't too meaningful and the results were scattered about but overall Cinnamon and KDE had their share of wins, but for many of the tests there wasn't much of a difference imposed by the desktop environment.
