With the exception of the R9 Fury on open-source, the other graphics cards on Linux 4.5 + Mesa 11.2-dev were delivering playable frame-rates, but there is still more improvements to be made for catching up to Catalyst.

The R9 Fury on the open-source driver would lockup mid-way through the Valley tech demo. The R9 285 performance for Valley was impressive as were the other GCN GPUs using Radeon DRM.

When running Xonotic with low image quality settings where the performance becomes CPU bound, the performance of the open-source driver nearly met that of Catalyst with the exception of the R9 Fury.
