Intel Core i5 6500: A Great Skylake CPU For $200, Works Well On Linux

The Core i5 6500 was able to compile the default Linux kernel build in just over two minutes. The i5-6500 was beat out by the FX-8370 and the other Intel CPUs with Hyper Threading since this timed kernel compilation process makes use of parallel jobs.

The Core i5 6500 continues holding its ground as a nice $200 processor.

With OpenSSL is one of the few workloads where AMD CPUs have always done rather well. The i5-6500 performance is respectable in this test considering the lack of Hyper Threading and did still come out as a nice upgrade over the Core i5 4670. If you're still an Intel Sandy Bridge user, the Core i5 6500 in all of these Linux source tests were running nicely ahead of the Core i5 2500K.
