For a more interesting look, I compared this Xeon E3-1231 v3 system against dozens of other systems in our benchmarking lab. Note here that there are Linux distribution / compiler / kernel differences between the test systems, but good enough for just a cursory look at how the Xeon E3-1231 v3 compares to other Intel and AMD Linux systems still running at Phoronix

The Xeon E3-1231 v3 at $250 does a good job competing with the Core i7 4770K that currently sets you back about $340 USD, assuming you don't care about integrated HD Graphics.
