4401: 1] Bring Back My Gnome Top Bar Applets
2] Bring Back My Options
3] Bring Back My choice

Man Up.

Read up on software deployment failures and why they happen, and u will see that u did everything wrong.

Just stupid

4402: * Make gnome2 gtk3 compatible
* Make the gnome3 fallback mode useful
* Give users more options, gnome3 is ridiculous in this aspect

Please ask your community what they want and don't try to copy all that macosx bullshit.
Many people liked gnome2, and seriously what the hell was so wrong with gnome2 that you had to ruin it completly with gnome3?
On the other hand, i don't care anymore, i'm a happy xfce user :)

4403: Currently Gnome 3 is crashing regularly for me, at this stage I don't know why
I would prefer to be able to alt-tab by window, not by application but alternative tab extension is not working for me
In gnome 2.x I had several useful indicators that I haven't been able to find gnome 3 equivalents for yet - eg system monitor and force quit, which i haven't been able to get working yet

While Gnome 3 looks better than 2.x, and will eventually feel like it has improved everywhere, it currently feels like there are a lot of regressions - as noted above

4404: it should be faster
less memory

gnome is too big, too slow.

4405: 1) Configurability - easier to manipulate config files
2) Configurability - more options concerning such as the possibility to add more "super-user-friendly" options to the otherwise oversimplified UI
3) A better file dialog

4406: just make it faster and count with compiz like extensions to promote ease of use and better window/application management

4407: Icons on the desktop
Get back traditional task bar
Ability to add/manage icons in the gnome bar

4408: response time is important. the closer to instant is always better. gnome should not get in the way by being slow. eg pressing the activities button (and waiting for the resulting screen) .. then searching through clumsy representations of applications icons can be more frustrating than clicking through a menu.

menus are like folders. gnome3 seems to hate menus, are we thinking that the filesystem should just be one massive directory? no, its organised in the hierarchy. we do this because it makes SENSE and it is easily grasped.

how to i know what 'libreoffice writer' is? i have a hint because its in a folder called "office productivity".

having sensible and simple defaults is important. BUT, so is being able to access advanced options and customisation. eg not having the screen blank is perfectly sensible in some applications (eg mediacentre)

listen to your users - when people say 'i like doing Y for reason X', responding with 'learn to do Z, because we think it is better' is not listening.

4409: Settings from Tweak Tool should be integrated into System Settings

4410: gnome2 is OK,
gnome3 - change it's existence!

Gnome3 is a way to the hell, It's maybe tablet usable, but for the serious work NO WAY.

4411: get back to v. 2
get back to v. 2
get back to v. 2

get back to v. 2

4412: shutdown command visible without pressing modifier

4413: 1. Return to version 2.
2. Make it easier to customize, as in KDE. (I had trouble getting used to Gnome 2. when I left KDE 4.0, until I went empty-headed. With empty head Gnome 2. is fine, and that's good for users like me who just want things to work so we can work.)
3. That's all.

Simplicity carries great beauty. Gnome 2.was beautifully simple, and its simplicity was graceful. KDE almost destroyed itself by adding cutesy eye candy, as in MS Windows. MS Windows infuriated me because it treated me like a child incapable of thinking like an adult. KDE, in copying MS, carries some of that stigma, at least for me. KDE 4. subtly turns me off when I want to like it. You're moving in a similar direction. Right now, all major desktops are copying each other. It's hard to think originally, but you all need to do it. KEEP YOUR OWN PERSONALITY! It's important!

4414: Gnome 2 was ok after KDE 4 came out and became useless.
Gnome 3 is useless.

Stop making Gnome 3.

4415: Add kioslaves or something like to have better network experience.
Improve nautilus.
Lack of funcionalities comparng with KDE

Keep working, and Please, Please, never forget that the first step for usability is system stability and performance.
Improve what you have, and change what you consider, but always keep the system running.

4416: #1, 2, and 3 are all the same: Bring back the GNOME 2 desktop. "Fallback mode" is not an acceptable substitute, as it doesn't have the applets I use.

Don't ignore your present users in your quest to lure in new users.

4417: usability (easy as soon as posible), gtk+ - good graphics toolkit for many languages (c, c++, vala, python, windows), good way for UX (gnome-shell)

i'm really looking forward to gnome-shell in stable release in my distribution (debian)

4418: Its disgusting logo.

The lack of real-time GUI configuration options and settings.

Its horrid default Mac-like appearance.

No. Their product is in no sense applicable to people like me at all. They could die in a fire today, and I'd never even notice the loss.

4419: 1)Continue developing the classic interface (successor of gnome 2.0) that does not need hardware acceleration and give the users the option to choose which interface to use.
2)More configuration options
3)Use less memory, cpu and gpu, consolidate libraries.

1)Continue developing the classic interface (successor of gnome 2.0) that does not need hardware acceleration and give the users the option to choose which interface to use.
2)More configuration options
3)Use less memory, cpu and gpu, consolidate libraries.

4420: Keyboard shortcuts for the favorites bar

Widgets on the desktop per default setting (Notes etc.)

Terminal window out of the notification bar for quick use

Just keep on, folks, you're doing a great work!

4421: Simplify graphic design even more.
Make it more customizable.

4422: Please don't take config options away or hide them!
Being able to change so many settings is a good thing, I love to taylor UIs specifically for my needs.

4423: open file dialog
file manager
more compact theme

4424: GNOME 3 makes things harder or impossible compared to GNOME 2. And it also wastes so much screen estate. Just keep working on version 2 and drop 3.

Doesn't seem that they made a right choice with version 3. GNOME 2 was my favourite desktop environment. Once version 2 gets obsolete I'll have to switch to XFCE or KDE. Good job guys.

4425: 1. Scrap the unholy crap that is the Shell! Appologize for the mistake.
2. Focus on the "fallback"/panel (keep the traditional desktop model!)
3. Integrate a "Switch to Xfce" button, that is default selected unless the retarded luser knows to hold down Shift+Ctrl+Alt+Right-click to be entrusted with configuration options

If you are bored & insist on experimenting (i.e trying to do a chineese cheap rip-off of the retarded mess that is OSX), please do so on an optional "Experimental!" branch, don't force it as a default onto users that vocally neither wants or needs it!

4426: Distribution needs change! Of course this is not the problem of only GNOME.

4427: file picker modal window

4428: Cursor blinks in text field... (and the setting is under 'Keyboard'? Seriously?)

I'd like to have all widgets usable in a vertical panel, for the netbook (cf time/date)

Dialogs should always have a 'Cancel' and an 'Ok' button

4429: I loved the gconf-editor in gnome 2. I always felt I had complete control. Gnome 3 limits the amount of control I have over customization. Gnome-tweak-tools is a good workaround, but an official app mantained by ubuntu feels more secure.

The design of the shell and the simplicity is impressive, but better GUI controls would attract new users.

4430: Windows has very good file browser. I want as good to GNOME. KDE has 'search' on the application menu, i want that. I want to be able also search for settings (say "display"), in the setting manager.. Recent files would be nice.

4431: I would like more control of the appearance, not so much themes as font and font size....

Also I would like full control over network settings again, fiddling with wifi networks is a bit interesting in gnome3.2

Keep up the good work, I think you are on the right track with gnome3, for me it's a big damn improvement over gnome 2. There is a bit work left, but I think you will be there with gnome 3.4 or something like that. :)

4432: reconsider the activities launcher concept

4433: Automatic window selection in upper left corner is annoying. I would probably get rid of it (or at least make it possible to turn it off).

Don't listen to Linus ;).

4434: more options - it is already incredibly easy to use, now make it more easily customizable
and, if you really are using a registry-like blob instead of config files, please don't do that.

thanks for all your hard work and wonderful software

4435: Unity, more settings!!!

4436: Please go back to the way things were in GNOME 2, I miss that. Please!

4437: I've changed to LXDE because of it's performance and minimalism but I recommend Gnome to any entry level user.

4438: Workflow (add a window list)
indicators back on top
customizable workspace layout

4439: Multidesktop support in gnome-panel 2.x like its is tint2, for example. Switch from metacity to lightweight openbox.
Now using openbox+tint2+gnome apps

4440: Make it lighter and strip some ugly GUI.

4441: Kill 3.x and make it faster and less memory hungry

Stop screwing with the thing. You are doing exactly what Ubuntu is doing and screwing up a good system by not working on the speed and polish (I know booooorrriiiiiiing) Gnome devs should imagine how it would feel if the car manufacturers pulled your car for service and reversed the brake and accelerator while making the handbrake a turbo accelerator, reversing the driving wheel and putting the clutch on the dashboard in a button labelled "self destruct, do not press" Ford/GM designers would then show your family how easily they can drive the improved car while explaining that all the crashes are because people aren't willing to learn the better newer way.

4442: Go back to 2.x style.

4443: better customizability
extended support for gnome 2.x

4444: Bring back the typing monitor from GNOME 2. This app periodically locks the screen, forcing you to take a break from typing/staring at the screen.

Having to press alt to shutdown (instead of suspend) is very non-obvious and unnecessary. I can understand the need for a minimal menu, but omitting this seems to bring a lot of user confusion for such a small gain.

More Compiz-style eye candy.

I might be in the minority but I love the new GNOME Shell. I have used both Unity and GNOME Shell for three months each, and although I found Unity (just slightly) more attractive, GNOME Shell is much easier to work with in terms of usability.

I hope the GNOME team manages to avoid the obsession with auto-hide that the currently is plaguing Unity.

4445: Ability to perform file operations (copy, rename...) from within a file dialog box (like it is possible in Windows).
Merge application menu with top (Gnome 2) top menu when window is maximized (ONLY when the window is maximized, not all the time like with Unity), merge menu and title bar when not.
Desktop widgets to display, say, a calender, clock, weather... on the desktop background (i.e. always on bottom windows).

Tried Gnome 3 and found it a REAL hindrance to get work done:

No permanently displayed, "at a glance", list of currently opened windows.
No minimize button without hacking the configuration.

Application menu optimized for the wrong thing: a non-existent touch screen instead of a very much there mouse.

Give me an optional application and system menu as well as an optional way of getting a list of windows present and I will be delighted to use it.

4446: 1.) In Activity-Mode I would add more options besides "Windows" and "Applications". Something like: "Most often used", "Favorites" and maybe some searchable datasources like files, music, etc. And I would give developers an easy way to add more options.

2.) I would add an easy way for users to change settings, themes and extensions. Especially installing extensions is not really intuitive at the moment. Maybe Firefox's way is a good one: A quite comfortable dialog part and one "about:config" way to dig deep into the way Gnome behaves.

3.) I would add a way to be able to switch applications via the top bar. Currently there is only the current application listed. It would be nice to also see other running applications and be able to switch to them.

All in all I like the new Gnome-Shell. The main issue I see is that by removing configuration possibilities the user gets frustrated if something is not working as he feels it should. Obviously, there are parts, users commonly don't need to be working on (especially details). But those options, that define the way the desktop behaves really should be there: Font-Anti-Alias, the famous Suspend/Shutdown-Option, etc.

4447: Don't break what is working ;)

4448: In recent years I use Ubuntu so these features might be there due to their doing:

* Remove Evolution Integration: I use gmail in a browser and I don't need a mail-client integrated in my desktop. If the need ever arises I will install one of my choosing separately.

* Remove Empathy Integration: I am a long-Time pidgin user and again wonder why my desktop integrates an IM client. All you need to foresee for IM clients is a notification area.

* Remove Network-Manager integration: It is kind of stupid to also loose your network connection after a graphics driver upgrade failure. On my laptop I use wicd instead since it has a more sane interface.

Stop forcing more and more applications down my throat.
I need an environment that can display multiple consoles and multiple code-editor windows next to each other.
And sometimes I might need a graphical file browser, preferably one that has the option 'open console at this location'.
Everything else is just fat that should be trimmed. Bring back the simplicity of gnome 1.2

4449: I would be grateful if the "fallback mode" of GNOME 3 had all the functionality of GNOME 2, only with GTK 3 under the hood.

4450: Ctrl+Shift to select ranges of items.

The theme, it looks horrible compared to KDEs oxygen theme.

Apply button on settings.

Remove the "on/off" switches instead of checkboxes.

Stop being dicks and respect users.

You are not the pioneers of a new computing experience, you are developers of a desktop system.

If you want to push the frontiers of computing experiences further, make your own project for the experimental needs. Dont push your shit onto gnome. GNOME must be the simplest common desktop, no frills or candy added.

4451: dont abandon gnome 2

the only problems i have with gnome are with the notification area, tray icons. sometimes that icons dont work (gnome2)

4452: gnome 3

4453: 1) Design
2) Usability
3) Improve Goolge (or other services) integration

4454: I would add an OSX-dock-like interface for quickly launching applications. Yes, Gnome 3 has one if you view the "Activities" overlay, but it would be nice to have it available by, for example, hovering my cursor to the left side of the screen.

For all the gripes I've read, I rather like Gnome 3. Is it a "step backward" in some regard? Maybe it is if Gnome 2 became so familiar that switching to anything else crushed your productivity. But I think many of the complaints show aversion to change rather than design flaws.

4455: Desktop wall (on custom key/mouse button) is a must have (what gnome3 have sofar is not enough)
Maybe option for fixed count of desktops
expose on custom key/mouse button

4456: Easier to configure to suit own needs.

Sane defaults for users, not the "sane" defaults according to a few developers.

Less bloat.

Learn to take criticism.

4457: I prefer having files/folders/shortcuts on the desktop, not a smartphone interface!
Please continue to allow that in some way.

4458: More tweak options

4459: Loose application coupling wherever possible

Auto-generated configuration dialogs from g/dconf schemas

No more foot logo

I'll keep my yap shut and see where GNOME evolves over the next two years.

4460: - less effects
- nicer themes

Implement a complete Gnome2 layer für GTK3-Libs

4461: 1) Leave GNOME shell as an option for curious and/or insane users, and bring back the interface from GNOME 2.x as the default.

2) Bring back user configurability - gconf/dconf are just plain silly as the only places to change stuff.

That's actually all.

4462: I am still not sold on GNOME 3 desktop. I love parts of the innovation, but I can't really see myself using it. Will probably go ubuntu 11.10 with unity right now.

4463: 1. make it more customizable
2. improve the responsiveness
3. try to achieve consistency

4464: less bloat
emphasis on speed
customization options

don't underestimate your users
test on low-spec pc's like netbooks

4465: I don't know.

4466: a better control panel to change hardware options
its still years behind other os'es if u want to add hardware a 2nd monitor etc u still need the cmd line.

4467: - starting programs in the background so that active window does not lose fokus
- more configuration options so that there is no need for tools like devilspie

I will probably change to Xfce when an upgrade brings GNOME 3 to my OS

4468: - Detection of second Monitor.
- Better support for suspending computer. When I woke computer, then gnome log out me sometimes (pretty unpredictable).
- Switching computer ... pressing alt key is really stupid idea!

- You do great work, but try to listen more to your users.

4469: 1.Add more tweak settings in Gnome Tweak Tool.
2.Get official extensions available at the earliest.I am depending on "webupd8" currently.

Don't get discouraged by negative comments about Gnome3.It's the way to future.Gnome team / Gnome Shell team are doing an excellent job.Keep up the great work.

4470: More lightweight

4471: Since I don't like virtual desktops, I:
1. want the minimize button back
2. want the maximize button back
3. want the application switcher toolbar back

The main problem with both gnome3 and unity is that they have forgotten the old design rule:
"Recognition is easier than recall"
Hence both tries to hide stuff, instead of showing it in smart ways!

4472: 1) Change 'enforced difference' between GNOME2 and 3.. User should be presented with a G2 interface and allowed to add desired 'upgrade' features towards G3 GUI. The loss of continuity between G2-3 has left many users with a bad taste. Maybe create a package for GNOME 2 users that allows installation of GNOME3 tools and allows users to 'pick' G3 GUI features to integrate, but does not force full conversion to G3 interface?
2) Don't worry about desktop at the expense of apps - if common used apps are running at maximum performance, users won't be distracted by the desktop so much.
3) ?? I got nothin else.

Keep it up! :)

4473: bring back gnome 2, simple configuration file placements, fix bugs

same as above^ bring back gnome 2, simple configuration file placements, fix bugs

4474: Thanks for that great desktop environment!

4475: I would add the scriptability of Openbox (piping menues etc).

Recruit women and teenagers to make UI graphics.

4476: nothing... :) sorry

Please help gnomeslackbuild comunity to implement Gnome 3.X to Slackware :-D

4477: 1. Polish. Fix bugs, just make it work. Flawlessly.
2. Consistency. Consistent interfaces among various applications. They still can suck big.
3. Keep it stable. No major changes! It ain't broke, doan fix it!

Get back to earth guys.

4478: - Settings panels loose important options from release to release
- Empathy is still worse than former Pidgin in several use cases

Keep up the good work!

4479: - applications
- speed
- addons

applications must be more quality (more functions)
do not alocate delevoprs for projects that are develop by others developers (empathy is needed, pidgin exist :))

4480: 1) user-theme-extension as a fix part of gnome 3.x
2) shutdown-button in the im-menu
3) faster animations

PLEASE move all settings in the gnome-tweak-tool to the system config menu.

4481: 1. The new message pane in Gnome 3 - I don't care what the Gnome folks theorized about it, it just plain doesn't work with existing apps.
2. More things need to be configurable in Gnome 3. I understand this can come later but I was trying to use it now.

4482: More tweakfriendly in the config files. Login window eg I want to decide and design myself.. window, box input colors etc.

Please please stop windownizing it and make yet another desktop enviroment to a cartoon. I havnt upgraded my systems since Unity because I cant stand it. Don't abandon the old Philosophies about modularity and design in favor for some visuals that just hinder us serious people in our daily work. I see no alternatives to Xfce if I'd upgrade my systems (seven of'em) today, and that's a big loss for me. I'm used to Gnome, I love Gnome and want to love Gnome in the future. Keep it clean ffs!!

Regards

/Richard, Sweden

4483: Remove evolution dependency in gnome-shell calendar, more options for settings

4484: * faster startup (I have this bug where my first login takes minutes, whereas logout+login again is almost instant, and yes it's a bug that suddenly appeared several months ago after an update of dbus/networkmanage/whatever)
* search box (à la Windows 7/KDE) in the application menu
* a better integrated alternatvie to gnome-do/synapse please :-)

please keep the fallback mode up-to-date and usable and I might switch to gnome 3 :-)

4485: Make it like it used to be.

Fork the Gnome 3 project and get back to working on Gnome 2.x

4486: 1. Less like GNOME.
2. Less like Mac OSX.
3. More like KDE.

Just stop making that piece of shit already, you tossers.

4487: go back to gnome 2.x or at least make a theme for gnome 3 that has the gnome 2 look and fee.
gnome 3 might look good and work on tablets, but it is far away to be production capable. I can't give people gnome 3 in an office environment. There would be too much confusion. and i am managing around 1500 desktops with gnome 2 (centos 5) so i know what i am talking about.

4488: i am satisfied with unity, but did not have a chance to try out gnome shell yet

4489: Gnome3 does fit to me, best of enviroments I've used/tried.
This is why I'm using it.

Sometimes beeing hit by bugs, mostly minor. One single annoyance is is an CTRL+V nautilus issue (http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg908899.html)

terminal/console: yes because my developement needs.

4490: Using 3rd party window managers should be easier. Metacity is a staming pile of horseshit that has you use the mouse all the goddamn time. You're not supposed to have to use mouse when you're not browsing the 'net, that is just bonkers. Yet Metacity has no functionality to quickly manipulate window positioning using keyboard.

I'm using FvWM, but combining that with the GNOME has been getting harder and harder. It's as if you were actually trying to prevent me from doing that.

Stop designing the system for illiterate idiots, don't try to clone Apple. People who would like that won't use GNOME anyway. Don't hide all the functionality under gconf. I use the system for Nautilus and gnome-terminal only, and you know what? gnome-terminal is by far the best GNOME program in existence because it's efficient, beautiful and DOES NOT TRY TO HIDE ANY FEATURES.

4491: Wouldn't dumb down the interface so much.
Would consider that there is more than One True Workflow.
#1, again.

4492: Be easier to use with keyboard only.

"Global Menu" in the window title of the panel.

A website to download extensions and apps similar to the Google Chrome one, for all its applications (banshee, gedit, gnome shell, nautilus, etc).

More documentation for developers (Epiphany extensions, etc).

Thank you!

4493: 1) tray icons (pidgin, etc.) move to top panel

2) remove title panel for maximized windows - like in unity (close, min, max buttons will be part of the top gnome panel)

3) missing shutdown in menu

yes - change things from point 22 ;)

4494: 2 plus monitor support
Integration of online accounts that doesn't require evolution
A distro of choice for gnome. Currently i switched from Ubuntu to fedora

Keep it up. Keep polling the community. Keep trying to be transparent about your future instead of arbitrary choice like Ubuntu unity.

4495: The GNOME 3 devs, designers and GNOME 3 as a whole.

Please stop going the Unity way.

4496: Addons, plugins, brains

4497: clean it, ease it in original way (not yet another mac os mock!)
need to aim to be accessible and captivating for newbies and AT THE SAME TIME not being hostile to power users and developers

4498: None, i'm fine

Some times listen to users (active application menu)

4499: One thing in Gnome-shell could be application start up from list of all apps. List is slow to load and cluttered with so many items shown instantly.

Another that shows through is the separate widgets in GTK+ and Gnome-shell. No easy fix for this, though.

Overall I'm quite happy with Gnome right now.

One thing I've been missing long time is proper locale support, i.e. having possibility easily change different categories of locale settings. I want to have messages in English, because I expect translation support for my own language in random applications to be varying a lot and inconsistent, but I do want to have number formatting, date presentations, etc, localized.

So far the above has required messing with session init files and environment variables, and even then I get braindead POSIX locales with features like month names translated while other strings not.

4500: Less memory hungry
In standard on Ubuntu
