What People Are Saying About GNOME [Part 5]

Written by Michael Larabel in Software on 4 December 2011 at 05:53 AM EST. Page 4 of 10. 27 Comments.

4301: I hate having to move the mouse from one side of the screen to the other to change desktops

4302: Better performance so I can do my audio work without rebooting into OSX.
Need a better way to get at the workspace switcher.
Do some polish work on the touchpad/mouse code, because it's not as responsive as OSX and does weird things now and again.

4303: 1- Add activity feature (like in kde)
2- Merge gnome shell and unity (most of unity with some gnome shell features shuch as the contact integration)
3- Add support for rotation of the screen when rotating the computer (use built in accelerometer when available)

thank you very much for your awesome work.

4304: Metacity needs more options, like new windows under the mouse or a button for the menu, like this one:
http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/Oxygen-appmenu?content=141254

Don't be afraid of adding options, I hate when I need to install use another application to configure something or get some functionality. It's frustrating...

4305: All windows resizable. I really do not understand that some windows cannot be resized, especially when there are elements in the window with scrollbars.

I'm also using symantic launchers like Synaptic (and before Gnome Do). I think these are the most valuable addition to the gnome-desktop and these should be default (I have not yet tried Gnome 3, maybe the dash works like that already, I know Unity tries to, but is not even close to Synaptic).

With the launch of Ubuntu 11.10 I will try Gnome 3. I have seen al lot from it on the web and it looks really good. Congratulations!

4306: get rid of gnome-shell
go back to the typical desktop metaphor of 2.x series
get rid of gnome-shell

go back to the typical desktop metaphor of 2.x series

the new gnome shell sucks

4307: 1. option to remove the new shell (not the fall-back mode)
2. option to use the applets
3. to be less dependent on some packages (like PulseAudio)

1. to forget the tablet wave, it is something that will pass after something new will come on the market; but the classic DESKTOP PC will stay...
2. to go back to Gnome 2.3 and from there to make an evolution, not to completely erase the past and try something new; if they do not do something, for sure they will loose users to the others DE (those who like gnome 3 should stop saying to switch to XFCE or LXDE because they are different)
3. first 2 suggestions are big enough...

4308: 1. drop shell, continue 2.x development (at least the look & feel).
2. see 1.
3. see 2.

1. I still like desktops. Don't make Gnome look like it should be running on my tablet, not my desktop.

4309: more options
make changing options more user friendly
keep gnome2 (don't fix what's not broken)

keep on rocking

4310: * stop dumbing down everything, give power users more options, the way KDE does : simple windows with few info/options, but buttons etc to access them if needed

* windows that can be expanded to see all of the inform....

* stop trying to copy "good" ideas from Windows & Mac OS !

4311: faster startup,
consistency of special key mappings between upgrades,
less stupify-easy, more poweruser-easy,

don't try emulating mac os or windows,
think of your own way to do things

4312: add some easy to use customization to fook-and-feel, so that GNOME can look as GNOME, KDE, Windows....

4313: I want a good traditional desktop environment.
Please give me Gnome2.

4314: Include Kupfer/Gnome DO/Some other luncher
Made it more configurable (gnome-tweak-tool style)

Keep up the good work!

4315: 1 more options
2 have the panels work properly on the side of the screen
3 have nautilus not hang on directories with many files and have the tree view update when you go to a new directory and when you switch to a new tab.

it seems like the gnome developers are lazy and think that they can pone off unimplemented features as unneeded. but if the users want a feature then the feature _is_ needed no mater what the developers say. also it seems that both gnome and kde are trying to *advance* the desktop at the expense of getting the things that are really needed developed. people use software because it works properly and has the basic features, if the software has fancy features but doesn't work no one will use it.

4316: Improve the evolution UI. (starting with the preferences dialog)

Thanks for everything.

4317: More out-of-the-box customizability for the gnome-shell panel

Keep up the good work, ignore the haters

4318: Have a better tool for file extension/default programs.
Just one space for setting keyboard shortcuts.
Make building panels easier, i.e. pinning program launchers, autospacing etc.

Better documentation on where a witch settings saved, so one can transfer config files from one computer to another.

4319: * Developers listening to their existing user base, not just voices in their head of future users who may never be.
* Fight the bloat.
* Work with incremental change rather then revolution.

I fear Gnome3.

4320: 1.-More settings to play with the desktop (colors, sizes, behavior, window managment, etc).

2.-Allow Interactive changes (on the fly) in all the interface.

3.-Documentation of code (available to all) in every important change in the project, meaning: to have someone in charge to make a document telling the reasons (Performance, shorter code, usability, etc) for that change. So coders and newbies can understand the evolution and help.

In the process of production and management, there's always a place for documentation in every good company. I believe that the fault in every Linux project is to make the same tutorial 500 people. and on a forum with 20,000 entries, it has to come from some project like Gnome to make a good site with all points covered(at least in title) and then users make the work and continue extending in the same title or entry (submenu, bubble, connection of idea, etc)...

4321: I'ld like some reconfigurability returned. I like that GNOME is simple and easy to use; however, in GNOME 3, I found it frustrating that I couldn't even add a weather applet.

I like the way GNOME 3 looks... Bring back some customization. Also, I don't like the new method of switching windows. I know good old Alt-Tab is still around, but I don't like having to move the mouse to the top left hand corner to find windows that got left behind things. Basically, I'ld like some kind of taskbar returned.

4322: GTK needs to be faster and more responsive; keep high level of configurability

4323: 1. More flexible configuration (add-ons, menu items so on. simple example: if there is no shutdown button by default I should be able to add it easily). Don't lock the user with your decisions.
2. Return autocomplete for commands in GNOME3 (in autorun).
3. Maybe you can show what actions you can do in activities. I always forget which button (down or left) will change position and to where, so I need to use mouse more frequently when I want. Or in configurations window I needed a time to understand that you can go back by clicking on text.

I don't participate in community but it seems that GNOME team doesn't listen to their users... Some decisions were justified with the "reason" that you though it is better for us. But such decisions as to remove shutdown/restart button because you encourage to use suspend sounds very silly... And I need a restart button quite often too... It is just one example, but there were a lot of even more restrictive decisions in GNOME 3 compared to GNOME 2 (which wasn't very flexible too) without simple way to change it.

4324: Add more configuration options, dammit! Also, make 'fallback mode' an actual alternative, not like some shitty thing you get to use just cause your hardware is not up to par.

4325: Nautilus - session remembering on exit (opened tabs, etc)

Nautilus - session remembering on exit (opened tabs, etc)

4326: Better looks

4327: Go back to version 2.
Go back to version 2.

Desktop are not like pads or cells. Create a desktop for a desktop.

4328: - Bring back the GTK theming
Nothing else I can think of at the moment

Apart from the theming, nothing else come to mind. GNOME 3.2 totally rocks, love the direction taken with integrated apps like Contacts and Documents. Keep up the awesome work !

4329: provide a more powerful and centralized control panel.
provide more options to tweak desktop and menu fonts and look and feel from within default gnome.
i think gnome should be able to roughly emulate a desktop similar to gnome2

i think gnome3 is a definate positive step forward, i like the eye candy and i think my desktop is working nicely at present.

4330: More choice/configuration option.

4331: Everything seems to be ok.

Every memory usage reduction is usefull.

4332: Ability to open multiple windows for the same app from the shortcut by default, ie click on urxvt icon opens a new instance instead of switching to existing.

4333: Real configuration options.

Stop dumbing down Gnome, I can't take much more of it.

4334: use compiz again, it's smoother and more configurable, which is something linux guys need !

notifications are very cool in gnome3

keep up the good work !

4335: Better/More Settings
Remove gconf-editor and replace it by a real settings application
Easier customization of applications and the desktop

Please, Please, Please, do not walk the direction of "The user is too stupid to use setup / configure his desktop" any further. Choice is what linux is about, and this includes the choice to comfortably change defaults. While providing sane defaults is important, and for the most part gnome managed to do this in the past, it is equally important to cater to pro users that might, for whatever reason, not consider these defaults the best for themselves.

4336: Accessibility, ease of access, improving speed.

4337: GO back to Gnome 2 - "There again, progress for progress's sake must be discouraged, for our tried and tested traditions often require no tinkering." Dolores Umbridge

Stop taking power away from power users.

4338: An option to use the old GNOME 2.x Desktop in GNOME 3.x

Could you please enable more options in the system settings!!!

E.g. make there an expert user option, that experienced users can control more options.

4339: Gnome3's "Fallback Mode" should be a real and usable alternative to Gnome3 users (today, it isn't!).
The traditional desktop should be an option, not a "Fallback Mode".

Please remember some people love Gnome but need to keep a desktop that eases productivity. Not all of us limit our use to surfing and chatting.
I love Gnome2 but unfortunately I don't like Gnome3.

4340: consistent Notification popups,
less magic

do not believe in the tablet hype

4341: 1) disable 3d by default
2) make gnome 2 interface work perfectly, including all controls (gnome3 classic doesn't cut it)
3) make power user interface, instead of idiot user interface

don't assume everyone is a idiot. you have a great deal of power users who are now using xfce, including linus himself. The new UI might be awesome for first time users, but old time users hate it.

4342: Implement a way to easily change fonts, icons etc.

Personally i like the new gnome shell. For the first time in my life i actually use virtual desktops. All other implementations before couldn't get me to use virtual desktops, but with the gnome shell i'm using them, and i really like it. Despite all the bud mouthing, GNOME3 is on the right track. Implement some features so that people modify their desktop again and most of the critic will be gone.

4343: Drop Gnome Shell. Go back to Gnome 2 (on GTK3 libs).

4344: -Toolbars hidden in upper part of the screen (just like Unity has).
-Easier access to Launcher (not just SUPER key and top left corner).
-More customization tools (background, screensaver, themes, icones, etc.)

4345: Return the (old style) taskbar panels at the top and bottom of the screen.

Use the screen space effectively. My computer is not a tablet, and it has a high resolution display; I do not need huge icons wasting large portions of my screen.

I would revert back to GNOME 2.x (or at least take similar design decisions)

Please don't force a UI change on your users for the sake of it. Gnome 3 feels like a ribbonised (and thus impotent) Gnome 2.

Now I am trying to emulate the Gnome 2 experience with XFCE. Although it is inferior to Gnome 2, there is no point sticking with a project that has been condemned to have no further development time.

4346: About gnome 2 multi-monitor support
about gnome 3.x a bar down the botton with the names of my running programs

A way to port all your key board shortcuts to kde easily but really keep on ding what your doing it looks good and I'm sure I'll learn to like gnome 3.x eventually :)

4347: Make it possible to change icon sizes, window border size etc. in GNOME Shell

Make it possible to hide the accessibility and bluetooth icons in GNOME shell

Fix a bug which means it takes me a long time to log out

I quite like GNOME Shell but I wish there was a way to customise the settings a little, especially the size of everything as it is too large

4348: I don't like this new apple style gnome. I want to be able configure things and I prefer this gnome 2.x style. Gnome is going to bad direction.

I tried this gnome shell for some time in my ubuntu. But now it seems that I need to change to xubuntu (xfce) because Gnome is changing to a direction which makes it unusable for me. No 2D virtual desktops, no own menus for all windows. No startupmenu. This dash (or what it is called) is so slow. Gnome Do is much better, faster and more simple to use.

4349: scrap current version continue with 2.xx
I CAN NOT STAND CURRENT VERSION IT JUST BLOODY AWFULL AND WILL NOT GET DISC SPACE HERE FROM ME OR THE WIFE.

iTS THERE DREAM THEY CAN DO AS THEY WISH BUT IT HAS IN MY OPINION GET TO BIG COMPLICATED SLOW AND GENERALLY AND UNUSABLE BLOODY MESS

4350: - more panel stability
- continued support for gnome 2.x
- icon size independent of panel size (multiple rows of icons in a panel)

STOP this crap called Gnome Shell. It is horrible on huge monitors!!!!

4351: 1. Provide more customization options by default, without having to install Gnome Tweak Tools or using gconf-editor.

2. Better support for dual monitors in Gnome 3.

3. Provide more official extensions to the Gnome Shell.

Listen to the users and their feedback!

4352: - Multi monitor behaviour could be improved

Keep up the good work :)

4353: Continue with development of GNOME 2.x

4354: Better support for multiuser desktop, especially in gdm.
Better support for XDMCP, especially in gdm.
Fix PulseAudio, in relation to the above.

I'm currently using GNOME mostly in a multiuser desktop, XDMCP situation. Mainly because it was supported in Ubuntu 11.04, barely, using kdm instead of gdm.

4355: - Get minimise back
- have the ability to **easily** change windows (without the need for a fit and waving my arms around)
- have the ability to disable 3d automatically when launching a fullscreen game/app

- Allow shortcuts back on the desktop - KDE re-allowed that...

- Please make it so that you do not have to use shortcut keys in order to use the desktop

- Gnome3 is far better than unity - however far less usable than KDE4,XFCE,LXDE,E17

Thanks for your efforts !

4356: The Menu bar to appear with the Top bar, to improve the desktop space for the browser (like Mac).

A great desktop.

4357: Don't fall into the trap of trying to follow mobile OS trends. They are different environments and trying to straddle both will result in something that satisfies neither.

And leave Mac OSX to mac fans. You are just alienating your base.

4358: 1. Expert configuration options somewhere to configure and modify things (eg. more customization options)

2. Network manager doesn't give option to disconnect from wlan/broadband network without turning off whole wlan/broadband.

Suggestions to new features:

- more window arrangement options (now we have full + half size windows). It would be nice to have option to get the window resized to 1/4 of the screen size

- file/content search (with tracker or any other indexing) integrated to overview view

- network connection editor integrated and enhanced... How to modify all connection (except nm-connection-editor from console)... Proxy / homepage settings per network connection basis.

4359: 1. add a single, integrated desktop configuration panel
2. add a single, integrated network configuration panel (including controls over ALL proxy server settings)
3. have the ability to have multiple simultaneous desktop configurations i.e. unique settings (including desktop files) per workspace

Keep killing the Bugs!

4360: activities, add to pannel

4361: Add proper color management to Gnome environment and all apps

4362: - Alt+Tab (I like the new one, but I would like the old style one as well)
- Disable shadows (The little things, but shadows annoy me)
- Return to old networking options (I just cannot find what I want sometimes).

Just the comments above

4363: I would like to have a greater opportunity to set the environment

NO, thanks to developers

4364: Better Twinview support.

I switched from Gnome 3 to XFCE on my primary desktop because I did not like how it felt with my Twinview setup.
The panels stretched across both monitors and was not easily configurable and there were graphical glitches when using the workspace switcher and other visual problems like that.

4365: 1: make easier to customise and deploy in a work environment (e.g. a simpler way of setting default settings than editing a dozen xml files)

2: make it easier for users to customise, like allowing them to disable/change mouse hotspots and disable all the other services they don't need.

3: stability

4366: Add a automatic tiling option.

4367: * make gnome-do a default launcher

4368: 1. add some more testing. unsupported proxy exclusion list in GNOME 3 should never happened!

think before changing

4369: Add or modify some application for photos viewing to be able to sort images by drag&drop. Now, the only way to sort photos is by renaming them by hand.

Make remember running apps to start automaticcaly after restart to work again (worked in 2.x).

When switching virtual screen (activity) with Ctrl+Alt+PgUp/Down, switch screen on all monitors. Currently only primary monitor works.

Thank you for your work :-)

4370: 1. Go back to the original 2.x desktop or create a Gnome 3 equivalent
2. Improve networking with samba shares
3. Improve desktop/nautilus performance

I'm sure you're all aware of users' disapproval of the direction Gnome 3 has taken. I would like to suggest making a Gnome 2.x desktop equivalent (using the gtk library used by Gnome 3) alongside the current version. I believe this will alleviate the displeasure felt by so many users.

Thank you for your time.

4371: I'm running standard Linux Mint 11 (Gnome 2.32) on a modern i5 4-core processor, but with an old 15 inch monitor. It happens that I can't recover a minimized window, and often the - + x "buttons" in the top right corner of the windows disappear. Of course I cannot say if this is Gnome bug or bug introduced by Mint team Configuration. This is going since a few months in a (still) "test" machine. However, it is pushing me to try other window manager... with Mint or with other distro.

4372: Yes, keep up the good work.

4373: keep it simple not retarded.

4374: I'd like a nice hierarchichal "start" menu back without ridiculous amounts of mouse-travel on a large monitor

4375: Transparent windows similar to kde or windows 7. I see beryl is trying something but not as successful as the 2 mentioned above. I'm waiting for Wayland like a child before Christmas :)

I would also like a simple way to install new themes from the desktop. A sort of Theme Store built into the GNOME.

Gnome should be more customizable. For example If I like all the window manager and themes and all but dislike the dock. I want to disable the dock and add Docky or Plank or something instead. Gnome 2 was great at this (with the panels and all). I made it look just like windows 7 for my mom....only more ...COMPIZ :)

I haven't been using gnome 3 that much.I have been using Unity but I want to use more GNOME 3.2 just to see how it works.

4376: 1. The panel. Using AWN right now and not turning back.
2. Enhanced Nautilus tools. Using Nautilus-Elementary and not turning back.
3. Keep it in pace with the time (obvious one).

Keep up the good work, but don't get too autistic with your own ideas. Listen to the users, specially the knowledgeable ones.

4377: Save sessions incl. window positions
Something like Activties which can be found in KDE

4378: I'm having big problems tailoring Gnome 3.2 according to my own needs (adding extensions, icons in the top bar, etc.) like I could easily do with pre-Gnome 3 versions. I'm not sure if this is because some of the tools to do this are broken in my current distribution (I'm running Fedora 16 alpha right now) or if it is by design. That is my only real problem with Gnome 3.2 so that's all three. Otherwise I like the new GUI and think it gives a better and more slick user-experience.

Do not take away the possibility for users to tailor Gnome 3.2 according to their wishes and desires. We don't need another Mac OS X. Let us make most of the decisions ourselves.

4379: 1. Drop Mono.
2. Each time I look at the theme changer, I look at the install new themes button and somehow believe it will open a window which will give me one click access to install themes from the web like Synaptic or some such. I always feel bad when it opens a FileOpen dialogue. Feels bad man.
3. Reduce the width of the GNOME desktop and focus improving the core:
-- Desktop tools (network manager, etc)
-- Flagship programs (Gnumeric, Gnucash) (dropping Tomboy for gnote; Banshee for Rhythmbox)
-- Federating the naming convention for programs. e.g. Capitalization: "mahjong" vs. "Nautilus". Hyphenation vs. CamelCase: "gnome-utils" vs. "NetworkManager" vs. "gThumb"(!).

Too much focus on the next great UI elements. Not enough focus on the hard and thankless jobs such as sandboxed applications.

Sandboxed application permissions like Android.

Keep up the good work.

4380: make GNOME 3.x better configurable and customizable without any third-party tweak tools

4381: Better/thinner integration with Linux kernel. I would love if GNOME will be the only one desktop on the top of the linux kernel. I want to see something like Control center in Windows - maybe Yast from openSUSE shipped and well integrated into the GNOME by default.

Keep up the good work ;-)

4382: * Use less memory like XFCE
* Reinvent power off button in Gnome 3

4383: 1) allow users to actually configure the DE (If you actually believe that changing the theme of the desktop environment is too advanced for normal users, nothing I could say would make sense to you :( )

2) allow users to configure the taskbar (maybe the XFCE way deserves some thinking? They allow users to put launchers/applets on the taskbar but without "fixed" positional coordinates in pixels, which is quite nice)

3) make a separate project called "Gnome 3", and revert the changes on the main DE, so people can actually CHOOSE if they like the extreme dumbing-down of the interface

I am very disappointed about the current state of Linux DEs.
KDE had a *big* fail with KDE4 (mostly by forcing everyone to switch as early as possible -- the current situation is not as dire), now Gnome 3 does the same, without any known reason.

It was obviously *not* the right time to ditch everything and start anew -- people that were happy with the "classic" desktop vision are now just left in the cold (alternative DEs like XFCE or others are still not popular enough to assume that role, in my opinion).

I wished you'd waited a bit more, or created a new project for Gnome 3 (which is, after all, a new DE and not Gnome -- KDE3 behaves more like Gnome 2 than Gnome 3 does).

4384: Speed up desktop workflow/response. On low powered (Atom N270) machine for example it takes too long to load the application "list". The desktop should run smoothly.
Display all open applications on task bar as they were in 2.x. I know there is a G-Shell extension but I don't want to have to move around desktop to be able to see if something is running.
Do something about the jumbo size title bars and black task bar.

We don't all use tablets.
Windows and Mac seem to be shifting to an apps must run fullscreen like the do on our phones philosophy. IF I choose to run a 50" widescreen monitor, just as an example, I don't want to only be able to see a word processor. I want to be able to view an electronic text book/API in web browser whilst coding in another window and not have to keep switching/minimize/maximize/accidentally close.... Please please don't follow suit. Don't even get me started on Windows Phone 8 Desktop Jumbo Tablet Edition. My desktop runs Vista so I'm not anti MS either.

We're not all idiots.
What everyone, unfortunately GNOME in particular, is targeting devices as inexperienced users. Unfortunately the IT industry started in reverse. Rather than starting simple so you evolved with the tech, we now have the tech but are getting too simplified. I have no issue with providing simple configuration options, but there needs to be compromise that is better than having to revert to {g,d}conf and friends. A little drop down advanced box. Case in point gnome-tweak. Why is it seperate? Why can't I change theme from the standard appearance configuration dialog.

4385: - Throw Gnome Shell out
- Stop dumbing down the users (over-simplifying the GUI)
- Start listening from input of the community.

See 22.

4386: Gnome three, Gnome three, Gnome three

evolution, not revolution

4387: 1 -Restore the old Gnome 2 desktop and menus, I hate the new desktop in Gnome 3 and it's tablet-centric approach.
2- I would make it more efficient, reduce its footprint.
3- Get the gnome developpers to start listening to Gnome users and undo the disgusting changes they have made to the interface in gnome 3.

Get the gnome developpers to start listening to Gnome users and undo the disgusting changes they have made to the interface in gnome 3.

4388: 1) Reduce the wasted space in icons and text spacing

2) Improve the quality of 3d graphics experience

3) Improve the responsiveness of the environment

1) consistency

2) security

3) configurability

4389: - Make Evolution better, faster, less bugs, smoother
- Make file sharing better. Make it easy to find other computers nearby and send them files using Nautilus.
- Better integration of backup facilities.

I'm very content with the GNOME 3.0 development, but I'm horrified by issues like 'suspend on lid close' and the missing poweroff button. Stop doing such idiot things. Listen to your users.

4390: An ability to have an auto-hiding panel at the same location as a visible panel. Meaning you see one panel most of the time but can overlay it with another panel as required, e.g. when the mouse is moved to the edge.

Please don't be tempted to force access to functions through standard sized and formatted icons (e.g. as in Unity) just because it is the iPad etc. UI paradigm and they look pretty. There is a limit in the number of complex icons that humans can unconsciously discriminate. Every file cannot have its own icon so humans end up reading text to discriminate anyway.
There is great, undiscovered scope for using sorted, filtered lists and hierarchies of text as a means of presenting choice. Vertical arrangement is better than horizontal.

4391: Make essential plugins part of the DE. I shouldn't have to enabled 3rd party repos. to install essential extensions.

Give the user more control over customization. out of the box.

Have a permanent window list, with option to disable.

See above.

4392: Never Steal my focus
Kill popup/modal Dialogs
Better documenta gconf

Jeep ob The good work

4393: 1)that it was easier to interact with the virtual desktops. Its a bit annoying (with a mouse) to go to the top left corner and then back to the right to interact with the desktops. Perhaps they could be fully there but then just enlarged when you scroll over them.

2)More extensions.

Keep up the good work.

4394: It would have been nice if Gnome 2.x and 3.0 existed in the same machine side by side. I ditched Gnome 3.0 after spending more than week to upgrade in Debian and find it difficult to use. When I tried to revert the packages to 2.x there is no way. That actually drove me to Xfce/opebbox.

Nice work with the latest Gnome 3.x release. But it looks weird in Virtualbox and I don't want to disturb my running desktop of xfce/openbox. Will try Gnome 3.0 shortly.

4395: configuration tools - fonts/wallpaper/hinting

4396: Please, do not remove the old-style interface (eg, Windows-like menu system) in future releases of Gnome.

4397: Restore the application menus.
Restore the minimize/maximize buttons and the task bar.
Put the icon and the app name on the window and not in the bar. The idea that the user uses one app at a time is crazy.

They should really listen to users. They have taken the wrong path with Gnome3. Gnome2 was much better, Gnome3 should have started from there.

4398: Give users more than enough power to customize their UserExpirience.
Make Desktop searching/finding/tagging - say tracker/zeitgeist - working.

4399: better configuration and customization

4400: Please, add option on login screen to login directly to the fall back mode in gnome 3.x.
