FreeBSD 8.1 RC2 was faster than FreeBSD 8.0-RELEASE with compressing a 2GB file using Gzip, but it still was no match for Ubuntu 10.10 when running atop the EXT4 file-system.

The LZMA compression results were much closer, but when simply looking at the numbers, FreeBSD 8.1-RC2 was the winner.

POV-Ray was noticeably faster under Ubuntu 10.10 than with FreeBSD.
