An Extensive Look At The AMD Naples vs. Rome Power Efficiency / Performance-Per-Watt

Now for some single-threaded workloads to look more closely at the performance-per-clock.

The PHPBench test profile itself is single-threaded and thus not much of a difference between the particular EPYC SKUs but still hefty improvements overall from Naples to Rome.

With this single-threaded test, the 7nm EPYC CPUs continued clocking higher than their older counterparts.

On a performance-per-MHz basis for PHPBench, the EPYC 7002 series delivered about 1.2x the performance of the EPYC 7001 series.

The performance-per-Watt for the new EPYC CPUs as well were still looking good even with this test only lightly loading the system.

This Apache test profile was also run using the single-threaded version for looking at the perf-per-MHz in this real-world workload.

The Apache 7302 had about 1.38x the perf-per-MHz of the EPYC 7351P and the EPYC 7402 had the biggest improvement at 1.48x the perf-per-MHz of the EPYC 7401P.

All while the power efficiency was still much in favor of Rome.

The Nginx web server was also seeing about 1.3x the perf-per-MHz in going from Naples to Rome.

The EPYC 7002 series is not only strong at raw performance and value, but the performance-per-Watt is indeed a big improvement over the Naples series.
