When moving to the OptiX back-end on the NVIDIA RTX graphics cards is where the performance gets really crazy... The CUDA back-end with the RTX 3080 took 25 seconds to render the BMW scene while with OptiX, the RTX 3080 could render the same scene in just under 12 seconds!

With Blender 2.90 there is OptiX support non-RTX GPUs now supported, but the performance advantage is certainly with the newer NVIDIA GPUs having RT cores.

With the Fishy Cat scene rendered using OptiX, the RTX 3080 took just 6% the time required of the GTX 980.

The GeForce RTX 3090 is potentially close to 20% faster than the RTX 3080 albeit we don't yet have any hardware access to that flagship card.
