The best performance for Unigine Tropics is found on the R600 Gallium3D driver when using a high-end Radeon HD 6000 "Northern Islands" series graphics card over any GCN-based graphics card with the less mature and less optimized RadeonSI Gallium3D driver or even the Cayman-based Radeon HD 6900 series graphics processors could use more tuning given the HD 6870 vs. HD 6950 performance difference.

When it comes to running the newer Unigine benchmarks, they wouldn't run on the Radeon HD 4000 series hardware that's bound to OpenGL 3.1 support. There were also issues running Unigine Heaven and Valley with the RadeonSI Gallium3D driver. With the current LLVM and Mesa 10.1 stack found in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, LLVM register allocation errors were emitted when trying to run these benchmarks... Hopefully they will be in good shape when testing out the latest LLVM SVN with Mesa 10.2-devel.

The Radeon HD 6870 and HD 6950 were able to push above 30 FPS for Unigine Valley at 1280 x 1024 with this latest stable open-source driver stack to be used by Ubuntu 14.04 LTS... It will be interesting to see how the open-source performance compares to Catalyst.
