The Radeon HD graphics cards are not designed for workstation OpenGL tasks, but we decided to run a brief test of SPECViewPerf 9 using the 3DS Max viewset on the RV770 and RV790 parts. The Radeon HD 4890 was only slightly faster than the Radeon HD 4870 with 3DS Max, but again, these cards are not designed for workstation OpenGL usage. If you are doing any workstation graphics, check out a graphics card like the AMD FirePro V8700.

With the 2D performance being very important to many Linux desktop users, we ran a few round of GtkPerf to look at the GTK tool-kit performance. With the GtkComboBox widget test, the Radeon HD 4890 was slightly faster, but not at a speed that would be noticeable to an end-user.

The GtkDrawingArea Pixbufs performance was about 8% faster with the Radeon HD 4890.
