The Promise Technology SATA300 TX4 retails for over $60 but there are some SATA 2.0 PCI controllers available for a lower price. However, the SATA300 TX4 is backed by an open-source Linux driver and should have no problems with any recent Linux 2.6 kernel distribution. In our timed disk read tests even for being bound by the PCI bus, it had performed comparably to a NVIDIA nForce 430 Chipset. While there is NCQ, TCQ, and large LBA support, it does lack any form of hardware RAID support. Beyond that, the Promise Technology SATA300 TX4 is a great Linux compatible disk controller for Serial ATA 1.0/2.0 devices. The card also supports mounting in a mini PCI slot and has disk activity LED headers.
