Mesa 9.2 was finally pushed into the Ubuntu 13.10 archive on Thursday and with the upgrade to the open-source 3D graphics library/drivers come many performance improvements and new features. Mesa 9.2 has already been benchmarked extensively on Phoronix, but with its arrival on Ubuntu 13.10, here are some Intel OpenGL benchmarks looking at the performance of Mesa 9.1.6 (Mesa up to now in 13.10 and previously shipped in Ubuntu 13.04) against the new Mesa 9.2.0 release. Testing happened on both an original X.Org Server and then when running both releases on Mir/XMir.

This Mesa 9.1 vs. Mesa 9.2 driver performance benchmarking occurred on Intel hardware in the form of the System76 Gazelle Professional laptop with Core i7 4900M "Haswell" processor that provides HD Graphics 4600. Ubuntu 13.10 in its development form as of this week was compared between its shipped Mesa 9.1.6 and 9.2.0 packages in the Saucy archive. When running the Mir testing, the same Mir package as of yesterday -- with the composite bypass support -- was used on both Mesa releases as well as the same X.Org Server.

Ubuntu 13.10 X.Org/Mir Mesa 9.2 Benchmarks

A variety of open-source OpenGL Linux benchmarks were run on this Intel system in comparing Mesa 9.1/9.2 on X.Org/Mir. All benchmarks were handled via the Phoronix Test Suite, an open-source platform by which you can also run your very own Linux performance benchmarks in an automated and straightforward way.
