Ubuntu 13.10 Performance On Intel Core i7 "Haswell"

The many Intel Haswell Linux benchmarks delivered on Phoronix this month have been from updated Ubuntu 13.04 configurations. However, if you're curious about what the performance is like when upgrading to an Ubuntu 13.10 "Saucy Salamander" daily development snapshot, here are some benchmarks.

From the Intel Core i7 4770K "Haswell" + Intel DH87RL motherboard configuration we have been benchmarking extensively this June, a daily ISO of the current Ubuntu 13.10 development state was installed. The daily development ISO used for the clean installation was from 19 June. This Ubuntu 13.10 development snapshot was tested in its stock configuration and then when upgraded to the latest Linux 3.10 development kernel as of 19 June as well (since Ubuntu 13.10 currently ships with the Linux 3.9 stable kernel but will ultimately move to Linux 3.10).

These Ubuntu 13.10 Intel Haswell performance benchmarks were then compared to the results shown within The Linux Evolution For Intel Haswell's Performance. Those results included the stock Ubuntu 13.04 Linux performance, Ubuntu 13.04 with the Linux 3.10 kernel, Ubuntu 13.04 with the Linux 3.10 kernel and Mesa 9.2 Git for graphics testing, and then Ubuntu 13.04 with the Linux 3.10 kernel and GCC 4.8 compiler for the CPU tests.

Right now in the Ubuntu 13.10 development cycle, the key packages include the Linux 3.9.0-6 x86_64 kernel, Unity 7.0.0, X.Org Server 1.13.3, xf86-video-intel 2.21.9, Mesa 9.1.3, and GCC 4.8. Aside from eventually moving to the Linux 3.10 kernel, Ubuntu 13.10 will also be moving to the Mesa 9.2 release where there are many Intel driver optimizations on the OpenGL side, but that won't come until closer to the October release date.

All of this Ubuntu Linux benchmarking from the new Intel Core i7 processor was handled in a fully automated and reproducible manner using the Phoronix Test Suite benchmarking software.
