If You're Lucky, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Can Boot Faster
Dell Mini 9 - Intel Atom
Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS: 19.43 seconds
Ubuntu 11.10: 41.80 seconds
Ubuntu 12.04: 48.89 seconds
With the once popular Dell Mini 9 Atom netbook, the boot results for Ubuntu 12.04 are a wreck. It took 48.89 seconds to boot Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on the Atom N270 netbook! That is very different from the 10-second boot time that Canonical was aiming for on this same hardware back in 2009/2010. This boot speed of Precise Pangolin is more than twice as slow as the times it took to boot in Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS.
While there were high hopes for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS booting faster, only for some (newer) hardware does it seem that Precise Pangolin is booting faster when it comes to a clean/stock installation. As I stated quite clearly yesterday, on older hardware, think twice about Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. However, for newer hardware Ubuntu 12.04 LTS is yielding great results from my performance-related testing as well as personal experiences with the Pangolin. I'm actually looking forward to moving from my GNOME2 Ubuntu 10.10 installation on my main production system (Apple MacBook Pro) to finally Unity on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. Power consumption results and desktop benchmarks are coming up next; I've also been tweeting test plans and request for tests via Twitter.
