Ubuntu 22.10 Bringing Some Performance Uplift For Intel Xeon Scalable

The lack of change in Ubuntu Linux performance for some of these tests aren't too surprising considering Intel has already had stable Ice Lake support on Linux for quite some time, even before the Xeon Scalable Ice Lake processors launched in H1'2021.

Some of the biggest improvements in performance for going from Ubuntu 22.04 to 22.10 was for OpenVINO, Intel's deep learning toolkit. OpenVINO for many different workloads was performing much better on 22.10 than 22.04 LTS, but that in turn was putting the performance only aligned with CentOS Stream 9. (OpenVINO was having problems building on Clear Linux due to its peculiar build system handling of dependencies.)

Ubuntu 22.10 was also enjoying some performance improvements with Microsoft's ONNX Runtime for AI.

When taking the geometric mean out of the dozens of benchmarks carried out that successfully ran on all tested platforms, Ubuntu 22.10 came out to being slightly faster than 22.04.1 LTS overall and at least a bump ahead of CentOS Stream 9 on this Xeon Scalable Ice Lake Server. Intel's Clear Linux meanwhile was about 25% faster overall than Ubuntu / CentOS Stream in their out-of-the-box state.
