Ubuntu 19.04 Radeon Linux Gaming Performance: Popular Desktops Benchmarked, Wayland vs. X.Org
The windowed Java OpenGL application performance didn't reveal any interesting differences between the desktops tested or even GNOME Shell with Wayland.
Running the HTML5 CanvasMark and MotionMark web browser benchmarks within Google Chrome on the different desktops didn't reveal any difference except for running MATE with MotionMark leading to slightly lower performance.
Lastly is a look at the harmonic mean of these different configurations using all of the FPS gaming benchmarks. As you can see from this composite view, there is hardly any change on Ubuntu 19.04 at least for the current RadeonSI+RADV graphics on Vega between the desktop options. Even the GNOME Shell X.Org vs. Wayland difference was minimal compared to past comparisons on older Ubuntu releases where (X)Wayland tended to cause a measurable performance hit. So overall, things are looking good on Ubuntu 19.04 for Radeon Linux gamers regardless of your desktop choice(s) with the performance being nearly flat except in extreme cases where Xfce/MATE were slower but that was for games already running in the hundreds of frames per second.
