Or in the case of John The Ripper is running with the E3 v5 hardware. For reference, the Xeon E3 1280 v5 CPU originally retailed for around $600 USD while the Xeon Silver 6138 premiered just above the $400 price point.

While x264 is multi-threaded it favors the higher operating frequencies of the other CPUs.
