Intel Xeon Silver 4108 + Tyan Tempest HX S7100
For your viewing pleasure today are some preliminary benchmarks of the Intel Xeon Silver 4108. More comparison benchmarks will be coming in articles in the days to come with having several new EPYC CPUs that await testing. For the brief comparison today, the processor benchmarks included the:
- Intel Xeon E3-1245 v5
- Intel Xeon E3-1260L v5
- Intel Xeon E3-1280 v5
- Intel Xeon E5-1680 v3
- Intel Xeon E5-2687W v3
- Intel Xeon Silver 4108
- 2 x Intel Xeon Gold 6138
- AMD EPYC 7601
This should be interesting as the tested Intel Xeon E3 v5 Skylake CPUs are quad-core plus Hyper Threading but their advantage is higher clock frequencies than the eight-core Silver 4108. The Haswell-era Xeon E5-1680 v3 meanwhile is a fellow eight core / sixteen thread processor with a 3.2GHz / 3.8GHz turbo rating; while it's from the Haswell days and with higher clock speeds, its TDP is 140 Watts and this CPU retailed for more than $1700. The higher-end Xeon E5-2687W v3, Xeon Gold 6138, and EPYC 7601 are there for reference purposes. Again, tests of other Xeon and EPYC processors will be coming in articles on Phoronix in the days ahead.
The Xeon Silver 4108 + Tyan Tempest HX S7100 configuration was running within a Rosewill 4U EATX rackmount chassis with Corsair AX860 power supply, 6 x 4GB Crucial DDR4-2666 ECC memory (albeit limited to DDR4-2400 with this processor), a 2U Xeon Scalable heatsink, and Corsair Force MP500 NVMe SSD. I've also done some additional tests with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 graphics processors but is not part of this test comparison today as later in this article are also power/thermal metrics.
These benchmarks were done from Ubuntu 17.04 with the Linux 4.13 stable kernel and GCC 6.3 compiler. The upcoming Xeon/EPYC articles are switching to all using Ubuntu 17.10 with Linux 4.13~4.14 and GCC 7 (possibly a GCC 8 snapshot) for getting a better glimpse at the bleeding-edge Linux capabilities for this new Intel and AMD hardware along with being closer to the form of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS that will be shipping in just a few months.
On the following pages are the preliminary Xeon Silver 4108 + Tyan Tempest HX S7100 results while the larger comparison is worked on.
