Kubuntu was 9% faster than PC-BSD with the MD5 performance in John The Ripper.

The Blowfish performance was also better by 9% with the KDE Karmic Koala release.

Kubuntu 9.10 also did better than PC-BSD 8.0 with dcraw, which measures the time to convert several RAW image photos taken using a Nikon D40x DSLR camera to PPM image format.

Again, the Linux OS beat out PC-BSD / FreeBSD, but this time with the MAFFT multiple sequence alignment test.
