FreeBSD/PC-BSD 10.2 vs. Ubuntu 15.04/15.10 Benchmarks
It's been a while since last running any BSD vs. Linux benchmarks, so I've started some fresh comparisons using the latest releases of various BSDs and Linux distributions. First up, as for what's completed so far, is using the FreeBSD-based PC-BSD 10.2 compared to Ubuntu 15.04 stable and the latest development release of Ubuntu 15.10.
With PC-BSD/FreeBSD 10.2 using the Clang 3.4 compiler by default, I also did a secondary run of all the tests when using the GCC 5.2.0 compiler available, in order to narrow down any compiler differences versus other FreeBSD factors.
The same exact system was used during all of the testing with the same hardware settings: Intel Xeon E5-2687W v3, 16GB RAM, Intel 750 M.2 SSD, AMD FirePro V7900, and MSI X99S SLI PLUS motherboard. The reported hardware differences in the table just come down to what the OS exposes, e.g. base vs. turbo frequency and other string differences.
Aside from doing the secondary run once installing GCC on FreeBSD, all of the operating systems were tested in their out-of-the-box configuration. All of the Linux and BSD benchmarking was done via the open-source Phoronix Test Suite. This is just the first performance comparison of several fresh BSD/Linux tests due out in the days ahead.
