Orange Pi 5 Is A Great & Very Fast Alternative To The Raspberry Pi 4
The Orange Pi 5 delivers significantly greater performance than the Raspberry Pi 4/400 line-up at roughly similar Amazon pricing with today's times of inflated prices and ongoing supply chain issues. The Orange Pi 5 8GB as tested in today's article can be ordered for about $108 USD on Amazon.com (affiliate link).
Across 169 different benchmarks I ran with the Orange Pi 5, this single board computer came out to delivering 2.85x the performance of the Raspberry Pi 400 overall. Those interested can find all of the benchmarks in full here.
For those wondering about SoC thermals with the Orange Pi 5... Across those 169 benchmarks run, the average SoC temperature was 71 degrees with a peak of 85 degrees. That is stock - without any extra heatsink/cooling. I did experiment with using a small passive aluminum heatsink with the SoC but that at least didn't yield much difference either to the raw performance or for lowering the SoC temperature beyond a couple degrees. In a follow-up piece I'll look at the active cooling potential for the Orange Pi 5.
Not only was it the huge performance uplift that left me impressed by the Orange Pi 5 but also having up to a 32GB model for those wanting to utilize more memory intensive workloads, the Mali graphics should be much faster (will be looking at that in a separate article) and enjoy open-source support via Panfrost, and the robust selection of Linux distributions available so far for the Orange Pi 5.
Those wishing to learn more about the Orange Pi 5 can do so via OrangePi.com or if wanting to pickup one of these budget-friendly-but-performant ARM64 SBCs can find them on Amazon (affiliate link). Thanks to Orange Pi for supplying this unit for review/testing on Phoronix.
