Intel's Gallium3D Driver Is Running Much Faster Than Their Current OpenGL Linux Driver With Mesa 19.3
First up are some runs with the Core i7 8700K OpenGL performance for its UHD Graphics 630.
In the vast majority of cases, the Gallium3D driver is much faster than the "i965" classic (non-Gallium) driver. In many cases of different OpenGL micro-benchmarks, Iris is upwards of 175% faster than the default driver!
The only cases where the Gallium3D driver is currently regressing performance is with ParaView's Wavelet Volume test, APITest's GL4 UntexturedObjects GLMapUnsynchronized and DynamicStreaming GLMapUnsynchronized, and CanvasMark under Google Chrome.
If going by the geometric mean of all the benchmarks carried out, the Intel Gallium3D driver on this Core i7 8700K system was 17% faster than the current OpenGL Linux driver from Mesa 19.3.
If going by straight wins/losses regardless of margin, the Gallium3D driver was faster 69% of the time.
These high-level metrics pretty much sum up the current Intel Gallium3D situation with this new driver now at least tied but mostly beating out the former OpenGL driver that is more than one decade old. If you care for all the individual metrics, see this OpenBenchmarking.org result file.
