OpenSolaris vs. Linux Kernel Benchmarks

While by slim leads, at the timed MAFFT multiple sequence alignment, Ubuntu was the faster operating system. The MAFFT test is a computational biology test that performs the alignment of 100 pyruvate decarboxylase sequences.

The best Fast Fourier Transform performance as measured by SciMark 2.0 was with the Ubuntu configurations. The Linux 2.6.30 kernels had advantages over Linux 2.6.24, but even still the 32-bit and 64-bit 2.6.24 kernels had ran better than Nexenta CP2 RC2 with OpenSolaris b104+.

Ubuntu 32-bit did worse than Nexenta CP2 RC2, but Ubuntu with the x86_64 packages were over twice as fast at the simulated Monte Carlo task. There was also a small boost with x86_64 Linux when switching to the newer kernel.
