The Current NVIDIA vs. AMD Radeon Linux Gaming Performance Ahead Of Ampere
At times in the past AMD with the RadeonSI Gallium3D driver has performed very well against NVIDIA on Linux. In this case with the latest drivers, the Radeon VII was running only in-line with the RTX 2060 SUPER.
For the newer Unigine Position demo, the Radeon performance comes out slightly better against NVIDIA with the RX 5700 XT and Radeon VII at least being a frame better than the RTX 2060 SUPER...
If taking the geometric mean of all the Linux graphics/gaming tests carried out in today's article, the Radeon VII and RX 5700 XT are effectively tied under Linux and squeeze out just ahead of the RTX 2060 SUPER. The Radeon RX 5700 meanwhile is just behind the RTX 2070 (non-SUPER) while the RX 5600 XT is a step above the RTX 2060 (non-SUPER). That's the current standings today under Linux with the very latest drivers on both sides of the table. It will be quite interesting to see how much uplift Ampere is expected to provide over Turing and ultimately seeing how the GeForce RTX 3000 series perform under Linux along with how much further NVIDIA will be able to widen their lead at the top of the stack, at least until seeing what AMD has in store with Navi 2.
