Intel Haswell Linux Performance For Valve's Source Engine Games

These new standalone Intel Linux GPU results for the Source Engine games are in the 1311126-SO-INTELHASW16 result file. To easily compare your own Linux system's performance to these Intel Source Engine numbers, it's as easy as installing the Phoronix Test Suite and running phoronix-test-suite benchmark 1311126-SO-INTELHASW16.

When running each game again on the HD Graphics 4600 at seven different resolutions, the frame loss with the increase in resolution wasn't as extreme as we've seen from some games and other graphics hardware in the past. For Counter-Strike: Source to be in the range of 60 FPS you need a 1400 x 1050 resolution or lower. The performance at a 1400 x 1050 resolution for both games was quite odd. For Team Fortress 2 at around 1600 x 1200 is where the game is in the range of a 30 FPS average.

The Haswell HD Graphics 4600 performance for Valve's games were roughly in line with the Radeon HD 4650 graphics card on the AMD R600 Gallium3D driver. The Intel HD Graphics 4600 "Haswell" performance on the open-source Intel Linux 3D driver is quite interesting. The HD Graphics 4600 are just a step below the Haswell Iris Pro graphics with embedded video memory, but still for running the Source Engine it's okay at lower resolutions if you're just a casual Linux gamer. At least next year Intel's Broadwell graphics should be a huge leap forward and there's the open-source Linux driver changes already in development.
