GCC 4.8 vs. LLVM/Clang 3.3 On Intel's Core i7 4770K

The LLVM/Clang performance improved on the i7-4770K CPU with this week's release of LLVM/Clang 3.3, at least for the HMMer scientific test workload, but the performance is still slightly behind that of GCC. However, between GCC 4.7 and 4.8, for HMMer the performance was unchanged.

The BLAKE2 cryptography workload remains noticeably faster with GCC over LLVM Clang, but there weren't any real performance differences when upgrading the respective compilers to their 2013 releases.

The Monte Carlo performance via the C-based SciMark2 improved in GCC 4.8 from GCC 4.7 to match that of LLVM/Clang 3.2, but LLVM/Clang 3.3 wasn't able to up the performance any further.

In some of the SciMark2 tests, there isn't much to see...
