Using the Phoronix Test Suite, the CPU temperature and system power consumption can be easily monitored by setting the MONITOR=cpu.temp,sys.power and PERFORMANCE_PER_WATT=1 environment variables prior to testing. A USB-based WattsUp power meter was connected to each system and automatically monitored by the Phoronix Test Suite for determining the overall AC power draw in real-time.

Here's a glimpse at the Intel HD 4600 graphics performance under Linux from the i7-4770K (the full Linux OpenGL tests are coming in a later article). The i7-4770K had a great showing for Xonotic and easily exceeds all other tested CPUs with integrated graphics when it comes to the performance-per-Watt. Haswell is a huge upgrade!

Here's the overall system power consumption as plotted over the course of the Xonotic benchmark.

While the i7-4770K had the best performance-per-Watt, it was also the warmest processor during this testing.
