Of 99 benchmarks run, there was just one where the i7-720QM beat out the i7-1065G7... In the Core-Latency program that measures the latency between CPU cores, the old Clarksfield processor came out ahead. That was a surprise with no immediate explanation aside from possible mitigations on Ice Lake being more severe than on pre-SandyBridge or differences in Hyper Threading behavior.

In all of the other benchmarks, the Core i7 1065G7 performance was generally multiple times faster.

In the kernel micro-benchmarks the Ice Lake performance was much better, including the context switching performance being much faster. Both processors were tested with their default security mitigations and latest microcode in place.
