Between Mesa 10.3.2 and 10.6-devel, the performance improvement was very significant for the Radeon R9 270X on RadeonSI while the HD 6950 on R600g saw only a modest increase in frame-rate. The Mesa upgrade plays a big role in the performance jump along with the continued work on the AMDGPU LLVM back-end.

The Unigine Tropics performance is up big time for both of the tested graphics cards compared to the Mesa experience shipped in Ubuntu 14.10.

Unigine Valley's performance barely changed for the old Cayman graphics card while the R9 270X saw a big performance boost in the past few months.

Warsow's performance also evolved nicely in the past few months. For Ubuntu 14.10 users switching to Ubuntu 15.04, you'll see these sorts of performance gains with modern Radeon GPUs on the open-source drivers.
