Benchmarks Of Fedora 9 Through 11

Beginning with the Urban Terror test profile, which is a game that uses the open-source id Tech 3 engine, Fedora 11 and Rawhide were many times faster than Fedora 9 and 10. In this area, due to improvements in the Mesa stack, things are running much faster. Hopefully once switching over to Gallium3D and that has matured, we will hopefully see even better performance along with more features. Fedora Rawhide was slightly slower than Fedora 11, but that is likely due to debugging options being enabled within the Rawhide packages and other changes going on with what is a very early development snapshot of Fedora 12.

While Fedora 11 marked the point at which Urban Terror began to run faster, this was not the case with OpenArena. In this ioquake3-based game, soon as OpenArena started within the Phoronix Test Suite, the system would hang. OpenArena does not always seem to play well with the Mesa DRI drivers, as for instance, the open-source ATI driver still can only handle this game at one or two frames per second due to outstanding bugs. OpenArena was playable with Fedora 9, having an average frame-rate of 41 FPS, but the game became unplayable in Fedora 10, was broken in Fedora 11, and now in Fedora Rawhide it's running again and we are seeing better numbers than before. With the latest Fedora Rawhide code the game averaged out to 46 FPS.

World of Padman, which is another open-source ioquake3 game, had similar results to Urban Terror. Running World of Padman on Fedora 9 and 10 were very slow with the Intel 945 IGP, but with Fedora 11 and Rawhide things are running much faster.
