Fedora 18 To Fedora 23 Linux Performance Benchmarks
Earlier this month I posted Radeon Gallium3D open-source graphics driver benchmarks from Fedora 18 to Fedora 23 while in this article are the complementary F18 to F23 tests looking at other areas of the system performance.
Within this article is a look at the Fedora 18 through Fedora 23 performance for the disk/file-system, CPU/compiler, and other areas of performance for this dual AMD Opteron 2384 system with Tyan S2932 motherboard, 16GB of RAM, 120GB Intel SSD, and Radeon HD 5830 graphics card. The same components were supported in all of the releases tested from F18 to the latest Fedora Linux Workstation build. This same system was used in the recent Ubuntu 6.06 LTS to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS performance benchmarks.
All of the benchmarks on each Fedora release were driven via the open-source Phoronix Test Suite benchmarking software. Each Fedora x86_64 release was cleanly installed on the system and using the default settings/packages. Some highlights for each of the tested Fedora releases include:
- Fedora 18 had the Linux 3.6 kernel, GCC 4.7.2 compiler, and was using the powernow-k8 driver CPU scaling driver with the ondemand governor.
- Fedora 19 used the Linux 3.9 kernel, GCC 4.8.3, and this marked the point it switched to the ACPI CPUFreq scaling driver.
- Fedora 20 had the Linux 3.11 kernel while still using GCC 4.8.3 as its base compiler.
- Fedora 21 as the first release of their Fedora.Next initiative had the Linux 3.17 kernel and GCC 4.9.2.
- Fedora 22 shipped with the Linux 4.0 kernel and GCC 5.3.1 compiler.
- Fedora 23 shipped with the Linux 4.2 kernel with GCC 5.3.1. A second run of Fedora 23 was done with all stable release updates, which brought the system to using Linux 4.3.
EXT4 was the default file-system throughout all of this Fedora testing.
