Corsair Vengeance Airflow Memory Cooling For DDR5 Server RAM
One of the quickest ways to see if a modern server is experiencing any DDR5 memory thermal issues is by running the High Performance Conjugate Gradient (HPCG) benchmark... It's been an easy test case across multiple servers for evaluating the memory thermal performance. Without any added cooling to these Micron DDR5 ECC RDIMMs at DDR5-6000 speeds, the average DIMMA~F Temp was above 100 degrees Celsius. But when attaching the Corsair Vengeance Airflow Memory Cooling Fans the average under HPCG load was 58 degrees with a peak of 68 degrees. Around a 40~50 degree difference!
When pushing the DDR5 server memory modules past 80~90 degrees Celsius is where throttling of the memory speed can occur and in turn make a huge difference on the performance of the system.
The DDR5 memory performance was also being throttled for more real-world workloads like generative AI with OpenVINO...
With OpenVINO GenAI benchmarks without the extra cooling the DDR5 DIMMs were up around 95 degrees but dropped to a 50 degree average with the Corsair memory cooling fans.
NAMD thermalLong story short, with newer Intel Xeon 6 and AMD EPYC 9005 series servers making use of faster DDR5 server memory, it's important to be more mindful of the memory thermals than with older DDR5/DDR4 servers.
