The graphics cards used for this XFX Radeon R9 290 Linux review was limited to hardware I had available. With AMD not sending out any review samples recently to Phoronix, it's limited on that side. NVIDIA recently sent out four new GPUs for Linux testing, but I've separately been working on those Linux reviews so those premiere benchmarks will come with those articles. The graphics cards I ended up using for this review included the following:

- AMD Radeon HD 6870
- AMD Radeon HD 6950
- AMD Radeon HD 7850
- AMD Radeon HD 7950
- AMD Radeon R9 270X
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680

Windows reviews of the R9 290 showed comparisons against the GTX 780 and TITAN, and the R9 290 gave those GPUs quite some competition. Even with using the GeForce GTX 680 as the top-end NVIDIA card in this article and holding off on the GeForce 700 series Linux benchmarks for their own Linux reviews, the GTX 680 and R9 290 under Linux was alone quite a battle. The GeForce GTX 680 is even able to outperform the Radeon R9 290 under Linux with the respective NVIDIA and AMD binary drivers.
