Starting with QGears2 using its X Render back-end, the Gears test had nearly doubled its frame-rate with the latest Ubuntu code. The average FPS had jumped from 17.82 in Ubuntu 8.10 to 31.69 in the soon-to-be-released Ubuntu 9.04.

The text performance though when using the X Render back-end had regressed slightly.

There was a small gain in performance when continuing with the X Render back-end and switching to the image scaling test. Shuttleworth's Jackalope release had just lunged forward slightly to end up with an average of 32.83 frames per second while the Ibex was at 29.12.
