AMD Threadripper 2990WX Linux Benchmarks: The 32-Core / 64-Thread Beast
Not only does the Threadripper 2990WX beat the Core i9 7980XE on raw performance, but the value proposition is even more so compelling... The Threadripper 2990WX is launching for $1799 USD while the Core i9 7980XE retail processor at Internet retailers as of writing is $1879 USD or even above $1900 USD at some retailers. It will be interesting to see if Intel immediately slashes prices on their Core i9 line-up or waits until they launch their next-generation products, but either way, AMD is providing immense pressure on Intel that will either hurt their marketshare and/or margins in the high-end desktop space. Here's a look at how the performance-per-dollar compares for the benchmarks and the current retail pricing on these competing CPUs.
Even in the less optimized/threaded tests like GraphicsMagick, the 2990WX still delivers measurable value over the 7980XE.
Clear across the board, the AMD Threadripper 2990WX was delivering much better performance-per-dollar over the Intel Core i9 7980XE competition at current pricing.
