With the AMD Threadripper 2950X and 2990WX I also ran some AC system power consumption tests compared to the Core i9 7980XE for also checking on the power efficiency / performance-per-Watt. In this configuration the three systems had their 4 x 4GB DDR4-3200 memory, AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 graphics card, and Samsung 970 EVO 256GB NVMe SSD. The AC system power consumption was being monitored using a WattsUp Pro power meter that automatically interfaces with the Phoronix Test Suite via a USB connection. It's worth noting for this testing it was still done on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS with the Linux 4.18 kernel but now using the default P-State/CPUFreq governors, the stock GCC 7.3 compiler, and no CFLAGS/CXXFLAGS overrides -- thus a configuration more akin to the out-of-the-box Ubuntu 18.04 experience.

On a performance-per-Watt basis, the Threadripper 2990WX leads as well. The 2990WX has a 250 Watt TDP and delivers 32-cores / 64-threads while the Threadripper 2950X has a 180 Watt TDP and 16-cores / 32-threads to the Intel Core i9 7980XE's 165 Watt TDP and 18-cores / 36-threads.

In multi-threaded workloads like Stockfish, the Threadripper 2990WX had an average AC system power draw of around 381 Watts compared to 244 Watts on the 2950X or 315 Watts on the 7980XE.

The performance-per-Watt overall is quite competitive with Threadripper 2 against the Core i9 7980XE.

Over the course of a range of benchmarks, the Core i9 7980XE had an average AC system power consumption of 169 Watts with a peak of 345 Watts. The Threadripper 2990WX meanwhile had an average power consumption of 186 Watts with a peak of 389 Watts. The Threadripper 2950X meanwhile came in slightly under the Core i9 7980XE with a 155 Watt average and 325 Watt peak power consumption over the range of various Linux benchmarks carried out.
