Amazon EC2 Linux OS Comparison

In preparation for the imminent release of Phoronix Test Suite 4.2-Randaberg, final validation testing was done on a variety of Linux operating systems in Amazon's EC2 compute cloud. Many of the official Linux images were benchmarked from the c1.xlarge High-CPU Extra Large Instance, including Amazon Linux AMI 2012.09, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.3, Ubuntu 11.10, Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS, and SUSE Linux Enterprise 11.

With many individuals and organizations fond of Amazon's cloud computing platform, I've shared the results on for those interested. The High-CPU Extra Large Instance (c1.xlarge) offers 7GB of memory, 20 EC2 Compute Unites (8 virtual cores with 2.5 EC2 Compute Units each), 1690GB of instance storage, 64-bit support, and high I/O performance. All of the Amazon EC2 instances were running from hardware with Intel Xeon E5506 processors.

Amazon EC2 Linux Virtual Machine Comparison

Amazon Linux AMI 2012.09, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.3, Ubuntu 11.10, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, and SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 were all tested with their default settings and packages -- including the compiler and kernel configurations. These results are being published for reference purposes and you can facilitate your own automated performance comparison with the Phoronix Test Suite by running phoronix-test-suite benchmark 1211287-RA-AMAZONEC222.
