Fedora v. Ubuntu: A Performance Look
From today's results we cannot call a clear winner due to all of the variables at play. However, with the system and set of benchmarks used, Ubuntu Feisty Fawn Herd 5 had outpaced Fedora 7 Test 2. Granted less than a second faster in LAME compilation and 0.27MB/s faster disk reads shouldn't warrant changing distributions if Fedora 7 feels a bit sluggish. The only benchmark where Feisty Fawn Herd 5 fell behind was Enemy Territory at 1280 x 1024. Outside of the quantitative results both desktops feel about the same performance-wise, and those that were consulted even thought Fedora 7 Test 2 felt faster than Herd 5. With Fedora Core 6 outperforming Edgy Eft in these tests, once both Fedora 7 and Feisty Fawn are released later this year we will carry out these tests again to see if things have changed for either distribution.
