Are You Sure You Want X.Org To Die?

Whenever posting news items about the X.Org Foundation, it's common to routinely see a few comments about "let X.org die already!", "Wayland is the future!", and other similar remarks.

While it's been explained before on Phoronix and elsewhere: the X.Org Foundation also stewards Mesa, Wayland, and other components to the Linux graphics/input stack like Pixman and libinput. The X.Org Foundation and x.org domain aren't just about focusing on letting the X11 server live on for eternity. While there have been missteps by the foundation, they are successful at least with organizing their annual conference, organizing work around Google Summer of Code, and similar efforts.

When a small percentage of people though see X.Org in any title, they can't help but think of the old and crusty code-base. With the recent news about the X.Org domain woes, there were many similar comments about X.Org should be put out to the pasture, etc.

In trying to further clear things up, X.Org Foundation board member and Linux input driver specialist Peter Hutterer wrote a blog post today about X.Org the project vs X.Org the Foundation.
