Verso Taking Shape As A Servo-Powered Web Browser
With Mozilla having backed away from the Servo web engine years ago and recent open-source development on Servo focused on making it suitable for embed purposes into other applications/software, it's remained to be picked up by any standalone web browser project. But taking shape over the past few months has been Verso as a ground-up build of a new Rust-based web browser making use of Servo.
Open-source developer Ngo Iok Ui who is also a member of the Servo Technical Steering Committee has been leading efforts on Verso as a web browser built around Servo and helping to explore Servo's needs and features. Verso aims to be the first robust web browser built around Servo, compared to the rather basic "servoshell" demo web browser built as part of the Servo project:
Verso is Rust-written, centered around Servo, makes use of WebRender for rendering its layout, and various feature work is ongoing. Via the Servo.org blog today is a post outlining more of the Verso project efforts.
Those wanting to build Verso yourself or to learn more this web browser is hosted on GitHub. There is also Flatpaks available for those wanting to try out the Verso browser. Among the future action items still are multi-window support, multi-process handling, sandboxing on all platforms, and enabling GStreamer multimedia functionality.
