Intel Tiger Lake Xe Graphics On Linux 5.12 Git, Mesa 21.1-devel
Recently I wrapped up some tests looking at the Dell XPS Linux laptop with Core i7 1165G7 "Tiger Lake" processor when looking at the Linux kernel performance of 5.10 vs. 5.11 vs. 5.12 as well as the impact if upgrading to the Linux 5.12 kernel.
In this quick article are some benchmarks looking at the Tiger Lake Xe Graphics performance with these newest open-source graphics driver components.
First up was looking to see if Linux 5.12 makes any difference for the Tiger Lake Xe Graphics given the ongoing Gen12 kernel driver improvements:
While Linux 5.11 brings some nice performance improvements for the Tiger Lake Xe Graphics, using the Linux 5.12 Git kernel hadn't helped the performance at all with no measurable changes found in the set of OpenGL / Vulkan benchmarks carried out.
Next is a side-by-side look at Mesa 20.2.6 out-of-the-box on Ubuntu 20.10 compared to jumping ahead to Mesa 21.1-devel via the Oibaf PPA. These tests were conducted a few days ago.
With these Mesa tests there were some improvements but not as significant as the kernel upgrade of jumping to at least Linux 5.11 stable. It is important to note though the tests were carried out earlier this week while last night Iris Gallium3D threaded context support merged as a big performance win. Thus I'll have fresh benchmarks again off the even newer Mesa 21.1 state in the coming days.
