60% of the Phoronix readers that participated in our weekend survey feel that SteamOS / Steam Machines will lead to a significantly greater market-share for Linux.

With it having been three years since the Steam Linux beta began and Steam Machines officially rolling out this week, our poll this weekend via Twitter came down to whether our Linux enthusiast audience believes these Steam Linux projects will lead to "significantly" greater market-share. 60% of them believed so while 40% did not.

Of course, some were overly ambitious with comments such as "I think that #Valve can do many things for lead #Linux to a new era where Linux is the PC master race OS" or "more the chance to magical transform your old Hardware into a console will Do the trick i think." Others were meanwhile more pessimistic, "SteamOS might be a relevant, but Steam Machines is the dumbest thing Valve came up in a while. So no."

As of Valve's Steam Survey for October, Linux usage remained under 1%. Outside of gaming, most surveys/data show the overall Linux desktop market-share at currently 2~3% while in some geographies is certainly much higher.

It will certainly be interesting one way or another for Steam on Linux in the months ahead! Stay up with the other surveys in the future via @Phoronix on Twitter.
