Steam On Linux Percentage Receded A Bit Further In September
Back in May Steam on Linux usage crossed the 2% threshold and remained that way until August when it dropped back below 2% for all Steam gamers. The September 2024 Steam Survey results were just published and point to another downward bump for Steam on Linux gaming.
In August the Steam on Linux marketshare was measured in at 1.92% while for September it has come in at 1.87%. The Steam on Linux 0.05% decline comes while macOS dropped by 0.01% while Windows picked up the 0.06%.
A potential explanation for the decline is that it was another month where Simplified Chinese use increased on Steam and also an increase in the number of aging Windows 10 installations.
When the Simplified Chinese use goes up and tends to be correlated with Windows 10 increases too, the Linux numbers typically take a brunt of the impact on a percentage basis.
The Linux stats continue to show Valve's SteamOS distribution as accounting for around 40% of all the Linux installs.
AMD CPUs continue to power more than 70% of the Linux gaming systems, in large part due to the Steam Deck being powered by a custom AMD APU.
