Performance-Boosting DCC Support Being Worked On For RadeonSI VI GPUs
Bas Nieuwenhuizen has been working on enabling Delta Color Compression (DCC) support for newer AMD Volcanic Islands (VI) GPUs within the RadeonSI Gallium3D driver.
Delta Color Compression should lead to better Volcanic Islands open-source driver performance thanks to reduced memory bandwidth. Today Bas published the second version of the seven patches needed to implement DCC support for VI hardware on RadeonSI.
The Volcanic Islands includes the Tonga and Fiji discrete GPUs along with the Carrizo APU. Of course, more pressing for boosting the VI AMD GPU open-source performance is power management / re-clocking for Tonga and Fiji, which we're hoping will appear for Linux 4.4.
More details via the Mesa-dev list.
