Red Hat Planning For A Wayland Tech Preview In RHEL 7.5
RHEL 7.5 will not be defaulting to Wayland, but it will be available as an option for those interested with it being billed as a "tech preview" feature. If all goes well, likely for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 is when the default migration would take place on supported systems.
This doesn't come as a big surprise considering for the past few Fedora releases they have been defaulting to Wayland, GNOME Shell on Wayland gets increasingly better, and distributions like Debian Buster and Ubuntu 17.10 and others are also defaulting to Wayland when using GNOME. For RHEL folks, using Wayland brings increased security over running the X.Org Server, better scaling, and other benefits.
I've been able to confirm the RHEL 7.5 Wayland Tech Preview plans this morning with a few hat wearing folks and further confirmation can also be found in a few Red Hat bug reports, some of which are limited to viewing by RHEL customers.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.5 will likely be released by mid-2018.
