LINUX KERNEL
While it's rare for there to be more than seven or eight (weekly) release candidates before a new major Linux kernel release, this evening Linus Torvalds has tagged 3.1-rc9.

No release announcement has yet hit the Linux kernel mailing list, but within Git there's the 3.1-rc9 tag. Since the 3.1-rc8 tag, there's been just a variety of regression fixes. However, the activity over the past week since Linux 3.1-rc8 hasn't been particularly much. The Linux 3.1 kernel should be nearly ready.

Worth noting now is that the Linux Git repository on Kernel.org used by Linus Torvalds is now back online. That's where the 3.1-rc9 commit was spotted, but for the time being at least it appears he is also continuing to push to his GitHub repository. The rest of the Kernel.org infrastructure is still being brought back online following a security intrusion back in August.
