While the FreeBSD 8.2 images have been on the mirrors for a few days now, the FreeBSD release engineering team has last night announced the official release of FreeBSD 8.2.

The FreeBSD 8.2 release brings Xen HVM support in FreeBSD's 64-bit version (amd64) and Xen PV support is improved with the 32-bit FreeBSD/i386 alternative. While UFS continues to be the default file-system, the ZFS file-system support in the FreeBSD 8.2 kernel has had its on-disk format updated against Zpool version 15. This FreeBSD update also introduces a driver for Intel's AESNI cryptography instruction set (aesni), BIND and OpenSSL updates, the GNOME 2.32.1 desktop, KDE 4.5.5 desktop, and many other improvements and bug-fixes.

The FreeBSD 8.2 release announcement can be read on this page. PC-BSD 8.2 has also been released to incorporate these FreeBSD 8.2-RELEASE changes while providing a cleaner, more friendly desktop experience.

On OpenBenchmarking.org are already some FreeBSD 8.2 benchmarks.
