LINUX GAMING
The Linux client for Unreal Tournament 3 has yet to be released, and almost one year later we still have no idea when this game will arrive for Linux. Ryan Gordon (a.k.a. Icculus) that ported the UT3 server to Linux and is working on the client does have some news today but it's not about this game. Ryan Gordon has just released the Prey client for Linux.

Prey is a game developed by Human Head Studios and first released for the Windows platform in 2006. This first-person shooter uses a heavily-modified version of the id Tech 4 engine. More information on the game-play can be found on the Prey web-site along with Wikipedia.

Ryan had ported the Prey dedicated server to Linux back in 2006 but there wasn't much activity pointing towards a Linux client until today. In fact, we were surprised when we heard the announcement. A long discussion about Prey on Linux from 2006 can be read on the Phoronix Forums.

The Prey Linux binary depends upon the game's CDs for the content, similar to other retail games that have been ported to Linux. In addition, a demo version of Prey has been released today. The demo and full-game Linux download links can be found at Icculus.org.

No update on Unreal Tournament 3 for Linux has been given. It's great to see Prey finally running on Linux, but hopefully it doesn't take UT3 two years for its Linux client to appear.
