Readers Think It's A Toss Up Whether Mesa Will Hit OpenGL 4.5 Next Year
That poll was driven by the fact that Mesa 11.1 was branched this weekend and it didn't meet any new versions of the OpenGL specification. R600g and Intel still don't have OpenGL 4.0 compliance while RadeonSI and Nouveau are still at OpenGL 4.1. Meanwhile, the latest OpenGL specification is version 4.5 from The Khronos Group plus the new extensions released this year (the "2015" update) without declaring a new official version.
A look at the extensions blocking Mesa from advancing can be found via MesaMatrix.net. There's significant work left across all drivers and core Mesa. It will still be many months before there could be anywhere close to OpenGL 4.5 compliance.
The poll this weekend asking readers whether they feel that Mesa will catch-up in 2016 is a mixed bag: 51% yes, 49% no. (There was also a dormant forum thread.) Only time will tell how far Mesa's OpenGL support will advance in 2016. Separately, it will be interesting to watch the open-source Vulkan Linux driver scene next year too.
